P1: UNIVERSITY OF MINHO
The University of Minho (UM), http://www.fisica.uminho.pt/, aims at being a University Without Walls, completely turned towards the socioeconomic environment and considered a case study of good practices by the European Universities Association. The team involved in this project has been working in Self-cleaning, depollution, anti-bacterial functions for more than 10 years. The UMINHO –CFUM team has expertise on the development of NM’s synthesis using a homemade system; i) use of TiO2 NMs in exploring their self-cleaning properties to improve road safety; ii) use of TiO2 thin films and TiO2 NM’s, to develop new air purification systems via immobilizing the TiO2 nanoparticles on inert surfaces (e.g. textile substrates); iii) application of doped TiO2 based materials as anti-microbial agents in diverse surfaces (metallic, polymeric and textiles); iv) application of TiO2 nanoparticles as mediators for the solar-activated controlled release of encapsulated volatile agents. The UMINHO team is coordinating more than 5 projects (National and UE) related to the proposed project objectives. The biofilm group of IBB/CEB, which has been working in biofilms for 25 years, is the major biofilm group in Portugal. In the last years the biofilm group members have also been assessing the antimicrobial activity of different materials (biomaterials and biofunctional textiles), using animal cells, according to ISO 10993.

P2- Institute of Cellular Biology and Pathology " Nicolae Simionescu"
The Institute of Cellular Biology and Pathology “N. Simionescu” (www.icbp.ro) has 33 years of well recognized experience in biomedical research, in the Cellular and Molecular Biology and Pathology of the Cardiovascular System. The Institute is member of UNESCO-Molecular Cell Biology Network, Centre of Excellence of the Romanian Academy and of the National Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation and Centre of Excellence of the European Community. ICBP has long experience in cell culture assays and derivation of cell lines and includes the laboratories and facilities, having all the equipment needed for the accomplishment of its tasks in the present project: Cell culture facilities; centrifuges with refrigeration; inverted optical microscope with fluorescence and time-lapse; Phase-contrast microscopes; Leica SP5 confocal microscope, TECAN microplate readers, flow cytometer etc. Over the last 5 years, ICBP published around 30 papers/year, many of them in prestigious journals such as J Am Coll Cardiol (IF: 14.156), Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol (IF: 6.368), J Thromb Haemost (IF: 5.95) etc.

P3-SC TARO COMMIMPEX LTD
SC TARO COMIMPEX Ltd is a private company founded in 1993. Its activity is leather and fur tanning and dressing and it is a modern tannery that meets EU requirements. Market demands imposed the development of innovative technologies and high quality products. This was possible by exploiting the results of research, development and innovation. To improve performance indicators and economic objectives proposed for the coming years, the company has refurbished the wastewater pre-treatment plant and certified quality management system (ISO 9001), environmental management (ISO 14001), following a grant program of the Ministry of Economy and Commerce. In this context, the company will be able to consistently provide products that meet customer requirements, develop policies and measures for environmental protection and to provide conditions for increasing performance indicators. SC TARO Commimpex LTD is a modern tannery equipped with the most important natural leather processing equipment, including occupational safety equipment. These equipment and personnel are operating in accordance with the quality assurance and environmental management system. The wastewater treatment plant is modern and provides wastewater treatment. The company has coordinated 2 Eureka projects and at present is participating as partner in a national project.

P4: Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL)
Chair of Functional Materials and Materials Systems, Department of Physical Metallurgy and Materials Testing, Montanuniversität Leoben (http://materials.unileoben.ac.at), the group at MUL has a long-term experience in characterising thin films and surfaces. The methods frequently applied include XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, EDX, 3D white light profilometry. Due to extended work on hard coatings during the past 20 years, the group has a comprehensive experience on tribological assessments of thin film materials. These tribological tests are used to reveal details about friction and wear between a counterpart and the thin film as a function of various external parameters, e.g. humidity, lubricants or temperature.
